A few of us went for a run to Northam on Saturday, including Greg O who was testing his new ankle. The main reason for going was to test the timing equipment with the extra radio mods and to use our new radios. At the same time it gave us a chance to exercise the cars and try out Cafe Yasou in Northam.
We met at the Artisan Bakery in Mundaring and after a leisurely coffee we all headed off at about 0815. The trip to Northam was uneventful and just used the main road. There was a bit of a delay going up the scarp as there was some mining equipment in transit which took up both lanes.
On arrival in Northam we parked in the main street and walked to Cafe Yasou. Many of us had Eggs Benedict of one type or another and I don’t think there were any complaints. I had the vege version and it was great. Tea and coffee also went down well. Peter even had dessert!
After the late breakfast/morning tea we headed off to Mt Ommanney and had a planning session up the top. The new antennae were mounted on the carbon fibre masts and plugged in to the timing beams and console. The directional yagi antenna went on the finish line and pointed down to the start line. The high-gain omni antenna was used on the main console at the start line, while the start beam used the standard Polaris stubby. We split up into two teams and started testing connectivity.
After some testing (mainly experimenting with the yagi direction) we had a pretty reliable link from finish to start, so we did some repetition testing to simulate sending cars onto the track. Again this worked well, so we called it a successful day. A few of us headed back into town to get refreshments while others took the opportunity to head home.
While at the pub we decided to visit the old netball courts site, as many of us hadn’t seen it. This was in better condition than expected and looked like it would be very good for a motorkhana or even a session of low-speed driver training.
The last of us called it a day at that point and headed home via various paths.
Many thanks to the members who were able to come along and help out. I hope you all had a great day, even though the driving was a bit ordinary and it got pretty warm in the sun.
Sunday, December 3rd. Starting 1000.

G’day everyone
we had a good time at Serpentine on Sunday at the Sport Aircraft Builders Club 2017 Fly-in! Saw some very interesting machinery, managed to talk about cars as well, Tony fixed his coolant leak, Liam took his clubbie apart for some reason and I met a man whose plane broke a crankshaft in mid-flight! Peter was very tempted to buy a plane but he wasn’t confident about what happens when they stop. And I met one of our long-time members who has never been to a Club meeting. Hi Kevin!
