Importing From South Africa?

May 16th, 2010 by admin

Hi All,

I’ve recently received a question from a gent in the process of moving to WA from South Africa wishing to bring his part built LoCost with him.

If you’ve got relevant experience on this could you email it to me?

I’ll collate and assemble a page on the site for future reference.

Thanks

The problem with importing a car is that you cant bring in a whole one without approval. if it is just parts, there are no such requirements. A complete car minus entire drivetrain qualified as parts when i was doing it several years ago. You would be best to have a chat with a customs broker as there are some requirements like tire washing, fumigation etc depending on what you bring in. These hidden costs can add up a bit. When I used to import car from japan, a used 15yr old car (much easier compliance rules for them) would cost me $5K on the road even if someone in japan gave it too me. things like wharf handling fees etc can soon add up, and this is where a customs agent can advise.
